Magewappa - Bent woodware from Japan

Magewappa is a traditional Japanese steam bending woodcraft found in Akita,  notrthern Japan. It dates back to about 2800 years ago.

Its elegant shapes are well known in other countries as well. Some famous items are boxes (Bento box, for example), cups and wine cooler. 

The material often used are Japanese cedar trees and Japanese cypress trees. The trees are sliced into very think slices, which are bent to form. 

They are popular as you can keep the food inside fresh longer, the light weight and easy to carry around.
