Joboji lacquerware

Joboji lacquerware is produced in Iwate Prefecture, northern Japan. While about 98% of all the lacquer used in Japan are imported from China and some other countries, close to 70% of the domestic lacquer production comes from this region.

It dates back to 8C and used to restore and repair national cultural buildings such as Kinkakuji temple (golden temple) in Kyoto and Chusonji temple in Iwate.

It takes about 20 years until you can take the Urushi sap from the tree!

These days a new way of using Joboji lacquerware is seen, for example on wallets and coin cases.
