Bizen Hidasuki pottery coffee /tea cup, handmade by a local artisan in Okayama Prefecture, Japan.

Bizen yaki (ware) is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns and it is considered to be one of the most outstanding kilns in Japanese pottery. Bizen ceramics is unique as it does not use glaze, like in many other pottery. These pottery wares are fired slowly over a long time in traditional climbing kilns with various chambers called Noborigama. The rustic appearance of Bizen yaki is suitable for daily use.

The Hidasuki pattern results from rice straw wrapped around the piece before firing int a kiln. The pottery is placed in a box called saggar, which protects the piece from the flame or the ashes. As it is protected in the saggar, due to the chemical reaction, the pottery ware remains white. Where the straw was turnes into scarlet color.
